In Free Sparring the attacker is allowed to throw any technique (within the rules) at any time with the aim of scoring points. The referee will ask each participant to face the top table, where the Jury President sits, and bow. They will then face each other and bow. When the referee gives the command, both participants will put their right leg back into L-stance and perform a guarding block. After the sparring session begins, the participants can move around and change legs as they please, trying to score points against their opponent.
The attacking area of the body is from the top of the head to the belt level. Only the front and side of the body can be attacked, not the back. For a punch to the body or head, 1 point will be awarded. For a kick to the body (standing or jumping), 2 points will be awarded and for a kick to the head (standing or jumping), 3 points will be awarded.
Moving outside the ring or losing balance and falling to the ground will result in a warning. If 3 warnings are received 1 point will be deducted. Points will also be deducted for contact that is deemed to be too heavy. At all times throughout sparring both participants must listen to the referee. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
