Sparring

Free Sparring

No set routine: the aim is to score points against your opponent.

In free sparring the attacker is allowed to throw any technique (within the rules) at any time with the aim of scoring points. The referee will ask each participant to face the top table, where the Jury President sits, and bow. They then face the referee and bow, and finally bow to each other. When the referee gives the command, both participants put their right leg back into L-stance and perform a guarding block. After the sparring begins, the participants can move around and change legs as they please, trying to score points against their opponent.

Scoring

The attacking area of the body is from the top of the head to belt level. Only the front and side of the body can be attacked, not the back.

1point for a punch to the body or head
2points for a kick to the body (standing or jumping)
3points for a kick to the head (standing or jumping)

Warnings and deductions

Moving outside the ring or losing balance and falling to the ground will result in a warning. If three warnings are received, one point is deducted. Points will also be deducted for contact that is deemed to be too heavy.

At all times throughout sparring both participants must listen to the referee. Failure to do so may result in disqualification. The referee's decision is final.

All free sparring in class is light contact, with students wearing the required safety equipment, under the supervision of instructors.
